40 Acres and a Mule: Reparations and the Estate Tax – Terrence Franklin Hosts ACTEC Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity Video

During a national meeting of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) in March 2021, an idea began to take form – Reparations for Slavery though the Estate Tax. Two ACTEC Fellows, Sarah Moore Johnson and Raymond C. Odom, began their collaboration through research to better understand the history of slavery, post-slavery US history, reparations and the wealth gap.

As host of ACTEC’s video series, Planning for a Diverse and Equitable Future, Partner Terrence Franklin spoke with Sarah and Raymond for the video “40 Acres and a Mule: Reparations and the Estate Tax” where they discuss an introduction to wealth disparity resulting from slavery and the Jim Crow law, and the connection to wealth transfer and wealth taxation.

The video series was created as a project of ACTEC’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity Committee, funded by The ACTEC Foundation, and will continue throughout 2021 featuring new guests and topics each month.
